The Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Adolphus Wabara, has assumed the national leadership of the party following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified its recent national convention.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the BoT said it invoked constitutional provisions to prevent a leadership vacuum after the apex court invalidated the party’s National Convention held between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The convention had produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC), which has now been voided by the court.
The BoT also noted that the Supreme Court upheld the suspension of key party officials, including Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary; Umar Bature, National Organising Secretary; and Kamaldeen Ajibade, National Legal Adviser.
According to the trustees, the ruling effectively nullifies all actions taken by the affected officials, including the appointment of an acting national chairman, the constitution of a caretaker committee, and the conduct of the party’s March 29, 2026 convention in Abuja.
“The implication of the judgment is that both the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led and the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led working committees stand dissolved,” the statement said.
It added that, in line with Section 32(5) of the party’s constitution, the responsibility for national leadership now rests with the BoT as the second-highest organ of the party.
“The Board of Trustees hereby assumes responsibility of the national working leadership of the party as an immediate constitutional remedial measure to stabilize and reposition the PDP,” the statement read.
As part of efforts to restore order, the BoT disclosed that it would convene an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to appoint an interim National Working Committee to manage the affairs of the party.
The interim leadership, it said, would oversee the party’s operations and ensure compliance with timelines stipulated in the Electoral Act 2022 ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The BoT also directed all staff of the party to resume duties at the national secretariat under its supervision pending the constitution of the interim leadership.
While commending PDP governors, the National Assembly caucus, and other party organs for their resilience, the trustees called for unity among members.
“The time has come for all leaders and members to set aside personal interests and work together for the survival and success of the party,” the statement added.
