Few days ago, Environment Day was celebrated all over the world with the theme 'OnlyOneEarth' June 5 is commemorated to raise awareness about environmental issues, the increasing deteriorating conditions, climate change, amonsgt other very important issues.
While the world is raising awareness on environmental issues and how to make the earth a better place of habitation, the case in Ogun State has continued to deteriorate on daily basis, on the micro issue of a clean environment.
Few weeks ago, HorizonTimes started a special report on the state on environmental sanitation in Ogun State, a worrisome state of the sanitation, which is enough to qualify the state as the dirtiest capital of Nigeria was published (https://horizontimesng.com/special-report-ogun-state-the-dirtiest-capital-in-nigeria-part-i/). The report which focused mainly on Abeokuta was to cover all major cities in the State.
But despite the awareness, the government of the day turned a blind eye to the issues raised in the report, especially, how waste managers have to travel to Iperu dump site from Abeokuta, after failure of government to manage the Saje dump site in the State capital.
Almost a week after, HorizonTimes went out again to observe the situation, it was as worse as it was reported in the first report. (https://horizontimesng.com/special-report-ogun-state-the-dirtiest-capital-in-nigeria-part-ii/).
More worrisome however, HorizonTimes gathered, most of these dump areas have not received attention from the waste managers in more than a month.
This newspaper went out again to observe the situation of things after the first and second reports, and it was observed that while the managers were seen to have evacuated some of these areas, like the side of the Late Chief Ogunpola in Pepsi, Quarry Road, Abeokuta, majority of the dump areas remain worse that they were when HorizonTimes first visited.
This, of cause, justified the claim of some residents, that they have not seen waste managers in their areas for more than a month.
Apart from the review on the two earlier reports, HorizonTimes again visited another major route in Abeokuta; the Sapon-Ijaye-Iyana Mortuary-Leme-NNPC road, and the situation seems to be the same all over major roads in Abeokuta.
