Police officers on Tuesday dispersed a group of residents, journalists and politicians with teargas at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos during a memorial event for victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.
Among those affected were Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, and Funso Doherty, governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The incident occurred as participants gathered for a wreath-laying ceremony organised by the Enough is Enough (EiE) movement to commemorate those who lost their lives during the anti-police brutality protests six years ago.
According to a report by TheCable, police officers had assembled at the tollgate before the commencement of the memorial.
The officers subsequently dispersed the gathering with teargas canisters, forcing participants to flee before the wreaths could be laid.
The organisers reportedly arrived at the venue with 15 wreaths intended to honour the victims, including Pelumi Onifade, a journalist who was killed during the #EndSARS protests.
The memorial was organised to remember those who died during the demonstrations that began in October 2020 against police brutality and the activities of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
According to the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry's report on the Lekki incident, nine people were confirmed dead, while four others were listed as missing and presumed dead.
Those listed as dead were Victor Sunday Ibanga, Abuta Solomon, Jide, Olalekan Abideen Ashafa, Olamilekan Ajasa, Kolade Salami, Folorunsho Olabisi, Kenechukwu Ugoh and Nathaniel Solomon.
The four people listed as missing and presumed dead were Abiodun Adesanya, Ifeanyi Nicholas Eji, Tola and Wisdom.
