The Federal Government has appointed Dr. (Mrs.) Sarah Titilola Ibiyemi as the new Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.
This marks a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead the institution since its establishment.
Her letter of appointment was formally presented by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Ishaq Kunle Salako who commended her professional excellence and longstanding contributions to the public health sector.
The appointment follows a rigorous selection process conducted by the Federal Ministry of Health.
Dr. Ibiyemi, a highly respected consultant and a former Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), FMC Abeokuta chapter, also recently served as the National Vice President II of MDCAN.
Her elevation has been widely celebrated within medical circles, particularly among colleagues at FMC Abeokuta.
In a congratulatory statement, MDCAN FMC Abeokuta described the appointment as “a landmark achievement” and praised the Federal Government for recognising the competence and institutional experience of internal candidates.
The association noted that the selection reflects years of advocacy by MDCAN and other unions within the hospital, who consistently championed the need for a capable consultant from within the system to lead the institution.
“As the first woman to head FMC Abeokuta, Dr. Ibiyemi’s appointment is not only historic but also a strong acknowledgment of the depth of expertise and leadership capacity that exists within the centre,” the statement added.
