The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has accused some individuals and groups of promoting what it described as persistent attacks, marginalisation and negative profiling of Islam and Muslims in Nigeria, warning that such actions could threaten national peace if left unchecked.
In a statement signed by its Public Affairs Officer, Abbas Jimoh, the council said it remained committed to peace and national unity under the leadership of its President-General, the Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, but stressed that restraint by Muslims should not be mistaken for weakness.
The NSCIA criticised comments made by a former president of the Christian Association of Nigeria linking the majority of criminals in the country to Muslims.
The Council described the remarks as reckless, baseless and capable of inciting unrest.
The council also faulted what it described as selective reactions by sections of the media and security agencies to issues involving religion, alleging that Muslims are often unfairly profiled while similar cases involving Christians are treated differently.
According to the statement, the council cited the recent arrest of a Christian pastor in connection with a kidnapping case in Oyo State, arguing that the incident was not portrayed as representative of Christianity, unlike cases where Muslim suspects are identified by their religion.
The NSCIA further alleged that Muslims have continued to face marginalisation in public appointments and political discourse despite exercising restraint, citing examples of federal appointments and past political developments.
While appealing to Muslims to remain peaceful, the council called on the Federal Government and security agencies to act against inflammatory statements and protect the rights of all religious groups.
It warned that continued attacks on the integrity of Islam and Muslims should be addressed in the interest of national peace and unity, declaring that "enough is enough."
