The former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has defeated 13 other candidates to secure the ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC for the 2023 general elections.
Tinubu secored 1, 271 votes to defat his closests raval and the immediate past Minister of Transporation, Chibuke Rotimi Amaechi who scored 316 votes.
The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, came distant third with 235 votes, while the President of the Sentate, Ahmed Lawan, who was earlier declared as the consensus candidate by Party Chairman, Abdullajhi Adamu followed with 152 votes.
Governor of Kogi State, Yahya Bello, who had earlier refused to step down as agreed by the Northern State Governors Forum scored 47 votes to come behind Lawan. Curiously, Bello celebrated the result where he was seated inside the state box.
Both Governors Dave Umahi and Professor Ben Ayade of Ebonyi and Cross Rivers States respectively scored 37 and 38 votes respectively.
Pastor Tunde Bakare, Senator Rochas Okorocah, Jack Rich and Mokelu scored zero votes; while the duo of the former Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonaya Onu and Nwajuba scored 1 votes apeice, with the former Governor of Zamfara State, Ahmed Sanni Yeima scoring 4 votes.
23 aspirants started the race on Tuesday, but eight of them voluntarily withdrawn from the race, with seven throwing their weights behind Tinubu.
A little drama however occured when Tinubu stood up to greet people on the first row but ignored Osinbajo who many people have claimed betrayed the standard bearer who introduced him into politics, by picking up the nominationa nd expression of interest forms to battle the ticket with his former boss.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, was however seen talking to Tinubu who later went back to the seat where Osinbajo was seated to greet him.
The standardbearer has howver called on other contestants to rally round him to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party which he reffered to as a party of terror and poverty.
President Buhari, who Tinubu claimed to have pulled out from political retirement in 2014 after three unsuccessful shots at the presidency, later was joined by other Party leaders to hand over the flag of the Party to Tinubu.
