Bandits Threatened to Kill Abducted Oyo Pupils if Troops Advanced, Defence Minister Reveals
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has disclosed that the abductors of pupils and teachers from schools in Oyo State threatened to kill the victims if security forces advanced further during rescue operations.
The minister said the threat forced troops to exercise restraint and adopt a more cautious approach while pursuing the kidnappers in order to safeguard the lives of the captives.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today, Badaru said the military had established contact with the abductors but avoided a direct assault because of the risk posed to the victims.
According to him, the kidnappers warned that they would kill the abducted pupils and teachers if troops moved any closer, making it necessary for security agencies to rely on intelligence-driven operations rather than overwhelming force.
He expressed optimism that the victims would be rescued safely, assuring Nigerians that the military and other security agencies were working tirelessly to secure their release.
The minister also dismissed suggestions that the military had relaxed its operations, insisting that troops remained under clear directives to confront terrorists and bandits wherever they were found.
The Oyo school abduction occurred in May when armed men attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of the state and kidnapped dozens of pupils and teachers, triggering nationwide outrage and renewed concerns over insecurity in the South-West.
President Bola Tinubu subsequently ordered security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Musa maintained that while the military possesses the capability to engage criminal elements, the safety of innocent hostages remains the foremost consideration during rescue operations, noting that every effort is being made to ensure the victims return home unharmed.
