Former Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernández has agreed to become the new manager of the Netherlands national team, according to reports emerging on Wednesday.

The development marks Xavi’s return to management after leaving Barcelona and represents his first appointment at the international level.

Reports indicate that an agreement with the Dutch football authorities has been signed.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Xavi had reached a “done deal” to take charge of the Dutch national team, with the agreement signed on Wednesday. 

The Dutch football federation has subsequently been reported to have confirmed Xavi as the new head coach, with his appointment reportedly running until 2030.

Xavi, one of Spain’s most decorated modern midfielders, developed his managerial philosophy around possession-based football, heavily influenced by the principles associated with Johan Cruyff.

He began his coaching career at Al Sadd before taking charge of Barcelona in 2021.

During his spell at the Catalan club, he guided Barcelona to the La Liga title in the 2022/23 season before leaving the club in 2024.

His appointment represents a major shift for the Netherlands, with Xavi set to bring his possession-oriented philosophy and Barcelona-inspired tactical approach to the Oranje.

The 46-year-old will now face the challenge of translating his club-level coaching experience to the international game, where preparation time with players is significantly more limited.
