The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has clarified the recent lay off of some of its work force, describing it as reorganization to prevent further cases of sabotage.
The refinery described the decision as part of thte ongoing reorganization within its facility which is aimed at ensuring safety, operational efficiency, and long-term stability.
In a statement issued on Friday, the company stressed that the exercise was not arbitrary but became necessary following what it described as “intermittent cases of sabotage in various units of the refinery with dire consequences on human life and related safety concerns.”
“We remain vigilant to our internal systems and vulnerabilities to ensure the long-term stability of this strategic national asset. It is imperative to protect the refinery for the benefit of Nigerians, our partners across Africa, and the thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on it,” the statement read in part.
The company noted that more than 3,000 Nigerians are currently employed at the refinery, with only a “very small number” of staff affected by the restructuring.
It added that recruitment of new talent continues through graduate trainee programmes and experienced hire placements.
On workers’ welfare, Dangote Petroleum Refinery reaffirmed its commitment to internationally recognised labour standards, including the right of employees to freely decide whether or not to join a union.
