The son of the Ogun State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sikirullahi Ogundele, Yusuf Ogundele has lost his state house of assembly bid of Ifo I State Constituency to the incumbent and Speaker of Ogun State house of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo.
Ogundele, the candidate of the PDP, lost the election following the declaration of Oluomo, the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, as the winner of the election by the Independent National electoral Commission, INEC.
This is despite Ogundele winning the rerun election, Saturday, conducted in ward 1 unit 4 of the state constituency.
Ogundele has scored a total of 185 votes, to defeat Oluomo who polled 167 votes in the rerun election, but that was not enough to return him elected to represent the constituency.
The Governorship and Houses of Assembly election conducted across the State on March 18, was declared inconclusive in the affected ward following overvoting recorded in the unit.
Before declaring the election inconclusive, Oluomo was leading by 968 votes having garnered a total of 7, 379 votes to Ogundele’s 6, 411 votes in the election.
After the Saturday’s rerun, the returning officer for the election, Prof. Richard Shobayo, declared Oluomo winner with 7, 546 votes, while Ogundele had a total of 6, 596 votes.
The returning officer said a total of 18, 378 voters were accredited in the constituency, out of the total 95, 448 total registered voters, amounting to less than 20% turnout.
The Action Democratic Congress, ADC which had one vote at the supplementary election came third with a total of 3, 208 votes.
Reacting, Oluomo attributed his victory in the poll to God and the good people of Ifo saying that it was a well fought battle.
He assured the electorate of more dividend of democracy saying the victory is a call to do more.
He urged other contenders to lay behind their differences and collaborate in developing the constituency.
Baring the formal declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Taiwo Oluomo, has been returned to the Assembly for the fourth term.
Although, the election of March 18 was declared inconclusive in the State Constituency, following overvoting recorded in unit four ward one, Olumo was leading by 968 votes.
Before declaring the election inconclusive, Oluomo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, had garnered a total of 7, 379 votes to lead his closest rival, Ogundele Okikiola of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 6, 411 in the election.
As at the close of rerun election in the affected polling unit on Saturday, only 363 voters were accredited. The votes are being sorted as at the time of filling this report.
Prof. Olusegun Onabanjo, the returning officer of the March 18 election had declared same inconclusive saying, “Due to over-voting observed in unit 04 of ward one, the election is hereby declared inconclusive.”
Olumo was voted as a member of Ogun State House of Assembly, after his third attempt, in 2011 under the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria ACN; he was elected again in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC when he was elected the Deputy Speaker of the House.
In 2019, he also won election into the House on the platform of the APC and was eventually voted the Speaker of the House.
Okikiola, the candidate of the PDP, is the son of Sikirulah Ogundele, the Ogun State chairman of the party.
