Two Allegedly Shot as ADC Supporters Head to Atiku’s Rally in Sokoto
Two persons suspected to be supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have reportedly sustained gunshot injuries following an alleged shooting by operatives of the Sokoto State Community Guards along the Sokoto–Wurno Road on Wednesday.
The incident reportedly occurred as supporters were making their way to the campaign rally of the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in Sokoto, amid heightened political tension in the state.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the Community Guards barricaded the road linking Sokoto metropolis with the eastern part of the state, forcing vehicles conveying supporters to turn back.
The situation reportedly degenerated into a confrontation between the operatives and occupants of one of the vehicles conveying the supporters, during which the guards allegedly opened fire, injuring two persons.
The victims were subsequently rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
A source disclosed that it took the intervention of the Civilian JTF attached to the convoy of Senator Ibrahim Lamido, Coordinator of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council in Sokoto State, before vehicles were allowed to pass through the checkpoint.
The development comes amid lingering tensions between the ADC and security operatives in the state.
The Community Guards had previously been accused of attacking the party's governorship candidate, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, Sokoto.
