LUS President Donald Trump has promised to pay a $5,000 dividend to every adult American citizen if Republicans retain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.

Trump made the pledge on Wednesday at a Republican convention in Dallas, Texas, saying the proposed payment would be funded by revenues generated from economic growth and tariffs.

Describing the proposed payout as similar to a dividend paid by a successful company to its shareholders, Trump said: “Because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”

The president said recipients would be required to spend the money within the United States, insisting that the proposed benefit would not be used to stimulate foreign economies.

“We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money. We don’t want you going to China, to Germany. You’ve got to spend the money in the United States of America,” he said.

Trump, who referred to the proposal as the “Trump Dividend,” linked the promise to what he described as economic gains under his administration. He also argued that Democrats would be unable to introduce a similar programme because of their opposition to tariffs.

“If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000,” Trump declared.

The president also highlighted his administration’s Trump Accounts programme, under which the government provides $1,000 for eligible children, saying the initiative had supported low-income families.

He further praised the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation for its reported $6.25 billion commitment to the programme, which he said would benefit children across the United States.

Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, while Democrats remain in the minority. Americans are scheduled to vote in November to elect members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
