The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola has taken a swipe at the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, over his threat to take over the construction of Sango/Abeokuta should the FG fails to fix the road in the next two weeks.
Fashola, while appearing on a Channel Television flagship programme, Politics Today, said Abiodun has enough state roads to engage and occupy his attention than threatening to take over a Federal Road.
Governor Abiodun, Saturday, gave a two weeks ultimatum for the Federal Government to fix the road, or else he would take over the road and begin to fix it.
While responding to a question by the anchor of the programme, Seun Okinbaloye, the Minister queried where the Ogun State Governor would assume the power to take over a federal road.
Fashola maintained that the power to administer a federal road lies on his office, adding further that the road was being constructed from the Lagos end through Sukuk.
He blamed the slow pace of work at the Ota axis which he said was not to the satisfaction of Governor Abiodun on limited resources.
“And I am sure Governor Abiodun has enough of his own state roads too to engage and occupy his attention.
“I am not going to engage in the needless administrative details here, I know that Governor Abiodun is aware, he is a law-abiding citizen Governor, he knows that road is a Federal Road, and I don’t know where the powers to take over a Federal Road will come from.
“I think the power to administer a federal highway rest with the Minister and I have provided every support I can, that road is being funded by the Sukuk, there is a contractor working there, Julius Berger, that road was inherited by this administration and from the Lagos end, work is going on.
“I am aware that at the Ota/Sango end, work has not progressed significantly to his satisfaction, but we are limited by the resources that we have.”
The Minister further revealed that Governor Abiodun has approached him with a proposal to take over the construction of the road, adding that the Governor was yet to provide the source of funding.
“Governor Abiodun has spoken to me before that he wanted to fund the road and I said, ‘show me where the fund is coming from’, where do you have the money? The road is about 56 billion, I am still waiting, I am sure he has something he wants to show me, that is why he wants to take it over.
“If he can provide the source of funding, then, we will go through the process of transferring a road from the federal government to a state government because there is a law that specifies how that is done.”
Many Nigerians have also taken a swipe at the Governor for threatening to take over the Federal Road while several other state roads were begging for attention of the State.
