The leadership of the House of Representatives has once again called for an emergency plenary session slated for Wednesday May 11, 2022, to amend what they called an error described as fundamental in the new Electoral Act.

Clerk to the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria Esq, issued the circular on Tuesday calling on all members of the House, Legislative Staff, the Media and the general public to note that the House was going to reconvene by 11:am on Wednesday for the legislative exercise.

The circular reads: "This is to inform all Hon Members, staff, media and the general public that the House hereby reconvenes for an emergency plenary session against tomorrow, Wednesday, 11th May, 2022 at 11:00am."

"This session has become necessary especially as to amend a fundamental error in the Electoral Act.

"The House regrets this short notice and implores all Members to be present.

The Senate had passed the new amendment on Tuesday after considering a Bill sponsored by Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege.

The amendment will allow statutory delegates, in addition to the delegates elected by various political parties, vote during congresses and conventions to elect candidates for various political offices.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan said the “unintended clause” has to be amended before commencement of party primaries.

The House of Representatives therefore, must as a matter of concurrence pass the same amendment before it can be transmitted to the President for assent, which may have informed the emergency session.
