As political activities intensify ahead of the August 16 bye-election for the Remo Federal Constituency seat, a political advocacy group under the aegis of APC Remo Vanguard has raised strong objections to the candidacy of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer, describing his emergence as a "grave disservice" to the legacy of the constituency.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, the group criticized the PDP candidate's political history and alleged affiliations, claiming that his candidacy lacks substance, credibility, and a verifiable record of service to the people of Remo.
"To many within the political and civic space across Remo, the PDP candidate inspires little confidence. He bears no track record of progressive engagement or meaningful service," the statement read.
The group alleged that the candidate is closely linked to an influential political figure from Iperu and described the relationship as one built on patronage rather than principle.
They also accused the candidate of enabling "vice elements" in the community.
Referring to the late Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga (popularly known as Ijaya), whose passing necessitated the bye-election, the APC Remo Vanguard described the PDP’s choice as a betrayal of her legacy.
"To elect the PDP candidate would be to desecrate Ijaya’s legacy... It would mean handing over our mandate to someone whose ambition is devoid of vision, compassion, or integrity."
In contrast, the group offered glowing endorsements for the APC candidate describing her as “a woman of honor, capacity, and a sterling record of public service.”
The group asserted that she possesses both the experience and alignment needed to deliver dividends of democracy under the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
"She is not only a bridge between generations but a symbol of what responsible representation should look like," the statement added.
Calling for a united front among stakeholders in Remo, the group urged residents to "say no to cultism, political thuggery, and a PDP candidacy," asserting that the future of the constituency hangs in the balance.
