Police arrest 11 suspected cultism in reprisal mission, other killed Monday night

Police in Ogun State have arrested eleven suspected cultists who were on reprisal mission following the murder of a suspected Aiye confraternity leader, Sorunke Akinwale, popularly called ‘Matasacker’ on Sunday.

HorizonTimes reports how ‘Matasacker’ was killed (https://horizontimesng.com/cultists-hack-another-rival-leader-to-death-in-abeokuta/) in front of a Pub House in Quarry Road area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

But in what looked like a reprisal attack, another suspected cult member was killed, according to Ogun State Police, on Monday night in Amolasho area of the State capital.

The suspected cultists against went on rampage early Tuesday morning when they engaged police officers at the Ijaye area of the state capital.

A journalist who ran into the sporadic gunshot saw policemen engaging the hoodlums in a face-off. This, according to an eyewitness, followed the Monday night incident which left one person dead.

The journalist report that the scene saw commercial vehicle drivers abandoning their vehicles, while other motorists and passersby scampered for safety.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police command, Tuesday, arrested seven suspects involved in the Ijaye shooting.

Confirming the arrest, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi said normalcy has returned to the scene as Police have been stationed at strategic location.

In a statement released by Oyeyemi, the names of the suspects were given as Kazeem Ogundairo a.k.a NEPA; Nasiru Idris a.k.a Aloma; Ayo Joshua a.k.a Terry G; Damilare Shogbamu a.k.a Dhray; Bisiriyu Ibrahim Owoyele, Labulo Jamiu a.k.a jay boy; and Olaitan Taiwo.

According to Oyeyemi, they were arrested following a distress call received from residents of Ijaye area that, the cultists were running riot in the area, adding that a special squad led by ACP Bolanle Muritala was detailed to the scene to put the situation under control.

He said the hoodlums ran to different direction, while some engaged the policemen with dangerous weapons, upon sighting the team.

In continuation of the clampdown, Oyeyemi said the operatives, on Tuesday, apprehended another set of four members of the dreaded Eiye cult group.

The police said they were arrested where they were holding nocturnal meeting in preparation for an attack to be launched on members of another cult group.

The suspects, Oriyomi Bankole a.k.a Ortom; Odedina Sodiq, Shofola Ayodeji and Adelawa Ayo were arrested at different locations in Oke_lantoro and Technical college Leme, according to the police, following a credible information received that the suspects were meeting in those locations planning to launch attack after their meeting.

“Upon the information, the commissioner of police, CP Lanre Bankole, ordered the CSP Shobiyi Oluwatoshin led anti cultists section to storm the place and dislodge the hoodlums.

“In compliance with the CP'S order, the team moved to the scene at about 8:30 pm where the four amongst the hoodlums were arrested while others escaped,” the statement read in part.
