The Oyo State Government has confirmed the arrest of five suspected terrorists in connection with Sunday’s attack on a military camp on the outskirts of Igbeti in Olorunsogo Local Government Area of the state.

The state Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, disclosed this on Monday in Igbeti after inspecting the scene of the attack with the Commanding Officer, 81 Battalion, Lt. Col. Innocent Asogwa.

According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, Lawal said the five suspects were arrested wearing military uniforms, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the group.

He said the military had deployed at least 120 soldiers into the bush in pursuit of the fleeing terrorists.

The deputy governor explained that the fire which destroyed an Operation Burst vehicle and the camp structure was triggered by grenade launchers fired by the attackers, which ignited cooking gas cylinders at the premises.

Lawal said the state’s newly procured surveillance aircraft would continue to support security operations and reconnaissance, noting that it could not remain airborne permanently but would be readily available when required.

He also announced the establishment of an emergency committee comprising the five adjoining local government areas of Olorunsogo, Oriire, Saki East, Orelope and Irepo to immediately provide the needs of security personnel in the affected areas and liaise with the state government for prompt assistance.

Lawal assured residents of Igbeti and the entire Oke-Ogun region that the state government remained committed to protecting lives and property.
