The Ogun State Muslim Council (OMC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, and President-General of the Council, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.
In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Asiwaju Kamal'deen Akintunde, Esq., the Council paid glowing tribute to the revered monarch, describing his passing as a great loss to the Muslim community, Ogun State, and the entire nation.
“The monarch’s demise has sent shockwaves throughout the community and the nation. The OMC pays tribute to his remarkable life and legacy,” the Council said.
The OMC described him as a unifying figure who fostered cooperation, development, and religious harmony, while remaining a committed Muslim until his last breath.
“He professed and practised Islam till death,” the Council noted, adding that he was a champion of interfaith harmony who allowed peaceful coexistence among all faiths.
The monarch played a pivotal role in promoting Islamic activities in the state, including the successful hosting of the 12th National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in 1997, which the Council hailed as one of the best-organized editions of the national Musabaqah.
Beyond religious leadership, Oba Adetona was also credited with significant contributions to the socio-economic development of Ijebuland.
“His initiatives in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic empowerment transformed the region and improved the lives of his people.”
According to the Council, his leadership and national service earned him the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), one of the country’s highest civilian honours, recognizing his status as Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional ruler and one of Africa’s most respected monarchs.
The OMC also reflected on the challenge of finding a worthy successor who could uphold and build upon the legacy of the late Awujale.
“The passing of Oba Adetona poses a challenge of finding a worthy successor. The Council prays for guidance and wisdom for Ijebuland as it navigates this transition.”
The Council extended heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the Ijebu Zonal OMC Chapter, and the people of Ijebuland, praying that the late monarch’s soul finds peace and his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Oba Adetona reigned for 65 years, a period marked by faithfulness, wisdom, and visionary leadership.
