The Ogun State Government has reiterated its commitment to repositioning tourism as a key driver of inclusive growth, empowerment, and economic diversification, with a view to establishing the state as Nigeria’s foremost cultural and creative tourism destination.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, gave the assurance at the 48th edition of World Tourism Day, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.
The 2025 celebration was themed “Tourism for Sustainable Transformation.”
The Governor said his administration is pursuing a holistic approach to tourism development that goes beyond physical infrastructure to emphasize inclusivity and empowerment.
He highlighted training and skill acquisition programmes for youths and women in tourism-related ventures, particularly in Adire production, which he noted has gained international recognition on global fashion runways.
“Our creative economy is being nurtured to tell the Ogun story in ways that resonate locally and internationally,” he stated.
Abiodun also disclosed that the state has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government to establish the ‘Renewed Hope Cultural Village’.
According to him, the project will preserve historical sites, empower young creatives, and position Ogun as a hub for cultural tourism.
Delivering the United Nations Secretary-General’s message at the event, the State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Sesan Fagbayi, stressed that tourism remains a powerful engine of opportunity, capable of creating jobs, fostering human connections, and driving inclusive change.
“Tourism must be inclusive, equitable, and green if it is to truly fulfill its promise of sustainable transformation,” Fagbayi said.
In his remarks, the Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage, advancing community-based tourism initiatives, and hosting landmark events such as the recently concluded Gateway Games.
He pointed to investments in infrastructure, including access roads, which have improved tourist inflows to Abeokuta and other parts of the state.
He further noted that the ongoing transformation of the iconic Olumo Rock Tourist Centre stands as one of the most remarkable achievements of the present administration, significantly enhancing the visitor experience and reinforcing Ogun’s place as Nigeria’s true tourism hub.
Fagbayi urged stakeholders to partner with the government in promoting sustainable tourism.
“All hands must be on deck to create jobs and improve the living standards of our people through tourism,” he said.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Culture and Tourism, Prince Adebola Basibo-Odoru, emphasized the state’s commitment to aligning its tourism agenda with sustainability principles.
These include eco-friendly practices, community-driven initiatives, and investments in cultural preservation and innovation.
He assured that the government will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that tourism remains a catalyst for inclusive and enduring growth across Ogun State.
