Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
In a statement issued on Sunday and personally signed, Senator Amosun described Oba Adetona’s demise as a “huge loss” not only to the people of Ijebuland, but to Ogun State and the entire nation.
According to Amosun, Oba Adetona distinguished himself as a pillar of stability and a rallying point not only in Yorubaland, but cross the nation.
“His departure is not only a huge loss to the people of Ijebuland but to all of us in Ogun State, and indeed, Nigeria,” the statement read.
Senator Amosun hailed the late monarch’s decades-long reign as one marked by visionary leadership, courage, and unwavering commitment to the socio-cultural and infrastructural advancement of Ijebuland.
“Through his wisdom, courage, and leadership, he transformed the Awujale’s stool into one of the most respected royal institutions in Nigeria,” he noted.
Oba Adetona, widely regarded as one of the most influential traditional rulers in Nigeria’s history, was also praised for his patriotic stance on national issues and his consistent advocacy for truth, fairness, and justice.
“His patriotic passion, courageous interventions in matters of public interest, and commitment to truth earned him national admiration and respect,” Amosun added.
Senator Amosun concluded his tribute with a heartfelt prayer for the late monarch, asking Almighty Allah to grant him Aljannah Firdaus and to strengthen the Anikinaiya Ruling House, the Ijebu Traditional Council, and the entire Ijebu nation during this period of mourning.
The highly revered monarch, fondly called Orisa Ijebu, joined his ancestors on Sunday at the age of 91, marking the end of a remarkable 65-year reign.
His death comes just hours after the nation was plunged into mourning over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona ascended the throne in 1960, making him one of the longest-reigning monarchs in modern Nigerian history.
