A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oluwole Oluwasegun, has reportedly died by suicide.

Oluwasegun, a student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was said to have died on Tuesday afternoon at his off-campus residence around the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Olarewaju Abiodun, disclosed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, saying the institution was informed of the development shortly after it occurred.

According to him, the university’s Quick Response and Security Team immediately proceeded to the residence, while the Nigeria Police was contacted. Officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, subsequently joined the university security personnel at the scene.

Abiodun said the deceased was taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.

He added that the university had handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

The university management also notified the appropriate student affairs authorities for necessary follow-up, particularly regarding the welfare and support of students affected by the incident.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues, while reaffirming the university’s commitment to the welfare of its students and staff.

The university also urged students experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help promptly from trusted individuals and appropriate university support structures.

“No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
