Nine people have been rescued and five others resuscitated following a fire incident at Afriland Tower, a storey building that houses businesses on Broad Street, Lagos Island.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service disclosed this in a statement on its X handle, Tuesday evening.

It explained that some occupants escaped without injury.

“A total of nine victims have been rescued. Five individuals have been successfully resuscitated.

“Several others escaped unhurt while efforts are currently ongoing to resuscitate remaining four individuals,” the agency said.

In an earlier report, the Service said the blaze began in the building’s basement inverter room.

The fire sent thick smoke through multiple floors and prompted an immediate evacuation of occupants after a distress call.

Videos circulating on social media showed thick smoke and scenes of panic as residents and passersby helped to evacuate people before emergency teams arrived.

The Fire and Rescue Service said its operatives later contained the fire and mounted search-and-rescue and medical efforts at the site.

Occupants were earlier seen in viral videos jumping out of a window in the building while others were rescued by means of a ladder, as thick smoke billowed from the high-rise building.
