Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said petrol sells for more than N3,000 per litre in the United Kingdom, arguing that Nigerians are “doing very well” with the current price of the commodity in the country.

Okpebholo made the statement on Thursday while speaking at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State.

The governor said he visited London the previous week and decided to compare the price of petrol in the UK with what motorists pay in Nigeria.

According to him, after converting the British petrol price to naira, it amounted to “N3,000-something” per litre.

Okpebholo said the comparison indicated that Nigerians were buying petrol at a lower price, adding that President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies were gradually stabilising the economy.

“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy. He’s an economist,” the governor said.

He acknowledged that the ongoing economic reforms were difficult but expressed optimism that they would eventually produce positive results.

Using an aircraft taking off as an analogy, Okpebholo said passengers were not served food immediately after take-off but had to wait until the plane reached cruising altitude.

He said Nigeria would soon reach its “cruising level”, when citizens would begin to experience the benefits of the reforms.

The governor also pointed to road construction across the country as evidence of ongoing development under the Tinubu administration.

His remarks came amid continuing concerns over the cost of petrol and other essential commodities following the removal of the petrol subsidy and subsequent changes in pump prices.

Okpebholo spoke while expressing support for efforts to rehabilitate the Benin-Asaba Road, which has deteriorated and caused difficulties for motorists travelling between Edo and Delta states.

He also endorsed President Tinubu’s continued presidency, asking those planning to challenge him in 2027 to reconsider their plans.

“Is Aso Rock vacant? Is Aso Rock vacant? So Aso Rock is not vacant,” the governor said.

He further said Edo State and Nigeria were in “safe hands”, while urging Nigerians to remain patient with the ongoing economic reforms.
