Nigeria has no Ebola case after patient’s evacuation to Switzerland — WHO
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of an infected patient and her husband to Switzerland.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this in a statement posted on his official X handle on Monday.
He noted that Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts, while Switzerland would take responsibility for the patient’s continued treatment and the monitoring of her husband.
Janabi said the evacuation was completed earlier on Monday, adding that both the patient and her husband were Swiss citizens.
According to him, the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed her through the acute phase of the illness and stabilised her condition before the evacuation.
He congratulated the Federal Government, healthcare workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in the country’s Ebola response, describing the development as a remarkable achievement.
The WHO regional director said the successful management of the patient demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and leadership in public health, particularly when countries collaborated to address health emergencies.
Despite the development, Janabi stressed the need for continued vigilance, urging health authorities to sustain contact monitoring and other public health response measures.
He explained that Nigeria would maintain close follow-up of 52 contacts, while Switzerland would assume responsibility for the patient’s continued medical care and monitoring of the 53rd contact, her husband.
The WHO’s announcement underscores the importance of sustained surveillance and international cooperation in preventing the further spread of infectious diseases.
