The new owners of Chelsea Football Club, Wednesday, sacked the head coach of the Club, Thomas Tuchel after poor performance to the season and a shocking 1 – 0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champion’s League group stage.
They had an indifferent start to the league season, losing two of their opening six Premier League fixtures.
In a statement, the club said Tuchel, “will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.
“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.
This is coming after Tuchel criticised Chelsea's underperformance in the Champions League group match, saying his side lacked "hunger and intensity" in the game against Dinamo Zagreb.
The sack is also coming just over a year after sacked Coach guided the club to a Champions League triumph, describing the sack as the right time to make the transition.
Chelsea was the biggest spender in Europe during the summer transfer window, splashing out more than £250mn on new players, bolstering the squad with the likes of England forward Raheem Sterling and Wesley Fofana from Leicester City.
Tuchel, who previously managed Paris Saint-Germain, joined Chelsea in January 2021 and led the club to the Champions League final that year, winning the most prestigious club tournament in Europe 1-0 against Manchester City.
Under his leadership, Chelsea also won the Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
Tuchel was the last head coach appointed under Abramovich, who was known for dispensing with managers. The German also coached Chelsea through the uncertainty of the final few months of Abramovich’s ownership, a period during which the club was unable to sell new tickets and merchandise owing to an asset freeze imposed by the UK government.
Tuchel’s own frustrations have been increasingly visible. He was fined and handed a one-match touchline ban earlier this season after a pitchside bust-up with Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte.
He was shown a yellow card during Tuesday’s game in Zagreb.
Existing coaching staff will be responsible for training the men’s first team and preparing for matches.
"Chelsea's coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach."
Brighton head coach Graham Potter, has been identified as the strong favourite to replace Tuchel, with Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane also in the mix.
