NDC chairman killed in Benue attack
The Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiidi Council Ward in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, Hon. Igbu Terhemen, has reportedly died after he was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants in Makurdi.
Terhemen was said to have been found unconscious in a bush near his residence around the NNPC Depot, along the Makurdi-Otukpo Road, in the early hours of Wednesday.
A friend of the deceased, who spoke anonymously, said Terhemen left home on Tuesday evening to watch a local football match in the Kanshio area but failed to return.
According to the source, concerned family members and friends began searching for him and eventually discovered him around 2am on Wednesday, unconscious in a bush close to his residence.
The source said Terhemen died before he could receive medical attention, adding that his phone was reportedly found on him, contrary to the possibility of a robbery motive.
The source also alleged that the deceased had a needle-like injury on his body, raising suspicion that he might have been injected with a substance before being abandoned. The allegation has not been independently established.
The incident has generated concern within the NDC, with the Benue State chapter condemning the alleged killing and calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
In a statement issued by the party's State Publicity Secretary, Agile Bem, the NDC described Terhemen as a committed member who contributed to the growth of the party in the state.
The party alleged that the deceased was attacked by suspected hoodlums, tied with ropes and injected with substances suspected to be poisonous before being abandoned near his residence.
Reacting to the development, the NDC State Chairman, Ohini Ojegbe, described the incident as a “broad-daylight evil” and urged security agencies to urgently investigate the matter, identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
The party said Terhemen's contributions to its development would be greatly missed, particularly at a time when his service and commitment were still needed.
However, when contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, said the command had not received a report concerning the incident.
The circumstances surrounding Terhemen's death therefore remain subject to police investigation.
