A member of the House of Representatives who went viral on Monday for assaulting a uber driver, Alex Ikwechengh, has described his attitude towards the driver as one which fell short of standard expected of a public officer.

A video went viral on Monday where the lawmaker from Abi State verbally and physically assaulted the driver, threatening to make him disappear without any consequence.

He has since been condemned by Nigerians, including his political party, APGA, while the police had issued a statement cautioning the lawmaker to stop dropping the name of the police to harass others.

In a statement personally signed, the lawmaker said his actions have caused harm and embarrassment to the driver, his constituents and the nation at large.

He also identified the swift condemnation by his party and the police as a demonstration of collective commitment to upholding the law and protection of the right of all citizens.

The lawmaker further promised to cooperate with the police in their investigation, declaring support for all efforts to ensure justice.

“As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behavior fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry. I understand that my actions have caused harm and embarrassment to the driver, my constituents and nation at large.

“I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into the matter. I support their effort to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable.”

The lawmaker also promised to take immediate action to address the underlying issues that led him to the incident, adding that he was seeking professional counselling to ensure that such behaviour never happens again.

“Additionally, I will be engaging in community service initiatives focused on promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.
