The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for the immediate sack of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, following allegations that he authored a legal brief to the United States on the alleged “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
The demand was contained in a statement issued on Monday, and signed by the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.
According to Akintola, the revelation, originally made by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN), was “shocking and petrifying,”.
He added that it raised serious concerns about the neutrality and suitability of Professor Amupitan to oversee national elections.
“A man who authored the hate letter to President Donald Trump about Muslims of Northern Nigeria cannot be expected to be fair in overseeing elections in Nigeria,” the statement read.
MURIC argued that Amupitan’s alleged role in drafting the controversial document disqualified him from presiding over elections, particularly those involving Muslim candidates in the North Central and other regions of the country.
“From the moment this disclosure was made, Amupitan has become persona non grata in Muslim circles in election matters. We hereby declare our total, complete, and categorical loss of confidence in him as INEC boss,” Akintola stated.
The organization, therefore, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove the INEC chairman immediately and appoint another competent individual who enjoys a national spread of acceptance.
“We suggest that any other qualified person, preferably of the same faith as Amupitan but from another geopolitical zone, be picked to replace him,” MURIC added.
The controversy follows an earlier report by the SCSN, which alleged that Amupitan authored the document submitted to the U.S. government claiming that Nigerian Christians were victims of genocide.
Neither INEC nor Professor Amupitan has officially responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
