The Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Dr Babatunde Jolaoso, has warned new students of the Institution to shun cultism, indecent dressing, examination malpractice, saying the institution has zero tolerance for antisocial vices.

The Rector gave this warning on Wednesday during the matriculation ceremony of 3, 944 students admitted into the school for the 2024–2025 academic session.

Dr Jolaoso also urged the new students to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to ease the burden of financing their education, noting that desk officers at the Students’ Affairs Office are always available to provide the necessary assistance.

He stated that the 46-year-old institution maintains zero tolerance for gross misconduct and any form of illegality, and would not hesitate to take decisive action against students found violating the school’s rules and regulations.

He explained that matriculation signifies the formal admission of students into the polytechnic and the beginning of their academic journey towards achieving lifelong dreams.

The Rector stressed that, beyond academic excellence, students must prioritise good character and skills, and avoid any conduct that could tarnish the reputation of the institution or their families.

He added that graduates of the polytechnic continue to excel across various sectors, including academia, industry, and private enterprise.

The school, he said, remains committed to equipping students with the practical experience required for skills and vocational development, while leveraging technology.

As part of its rebranding efforts, Dr Jolaoso noted that the Polytechnic Radio is now fully operational on 99.7 FM, serving as a platform for training and nurturing students, as well as informing, educating, and entertaining the public.

Addressing the students, he said: “As fresh students, I advise you to choose your associations wisely. Do not accept unsolicited help from unknown sources.

“Avoid anything that could tarnish the reputation of the institution or your families. Instead, invest your time and energy in meaningful, productive activities that will earn you honour and distinction.

“Let me remind you that your primary purpose on this campus is to earn a certificate that will shape your future.

“The Polytechnic’s Management has zero tolerance for anti-social behaviours, examination malpractice or misconduct, indecent dressing, and participation in secret associations—all of which you have sworn against today.

“I therefore wish you great success in your academic pursuit. Aspire to leadership in your chosen fields and always remember the values you represent. Shun all vices that could derail your goals.”

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu, reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering an educational environment that encourages innovation, entrepreneurship, and relevance in the 21st-century economy.

Prof Arigbabu acknowledged the critical role of institutions like MAPOLY in equipping young minds with the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to the development of the state and nation.

He therefore charged the matriculating students to embrace discipline, integrity, and diligence, noting that beyond certificates, the world now demands character, creativity, and a deep commitment to lifelong learning.

The Commissioner commended the management and staff of the institution for their unwavering dedication to mentoring the next generation, urging them to continue supporting government efforts to build a brighter future for the youth.
