Senator representing Kano South Senatorial district, Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, has confirmed his defection from the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).

This is coming amidst rumour that the presidential candidate of the NNPP in the last election and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso, is also on the verge of joining the APC.

A former aide to the former President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, also confirmed on his X account that the APC was making preparations to welcome Kwakwanso alongside the governor of the State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to the APC.

Bashir, wrote "Our party, the APC in Kano, is making all possible preparations to welcome Sen. Rabi'u Musa Kwakwanso, along with members of his party, the NNPP, including the Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf."

Senator Sumaila said the move was driven by his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his constituents.

He posted his fresh political move on his Facebook page.

“Yes, it is true. The reports regarding my defection are accurate. All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency,” he confirmed.

The senator emphasized that his decision was guided by the desire to improve the lives of his people and ensure their long-term prosperity.

“I am resolutely determined to advance the lives of my people, ensuring their needs are met and their future is secured,” he added.

While details regarding his new political alignment are yet to be made public, Sumaila’s defection marks a significant development in Kano’s political landscape.

Sumaila parted ways with the red cap movement – Kwankwasiyya – and the NNPP, he was recently suspended by the Kwankwaso-led NNPP alongside Kabiru Alhassan Rurum and Ali Madakin Gini.

However, they rejected the suspension, saying they were not in the faction that announced the sanction.
