Just In: Veteran Journalist, Communication Scholar Idowu Sobowale Dies at 85
Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, a renowned communication scholar, veteran journalist and respected member of Nigeria’s media community, has died at the age of 85.
Sobowale died on Thursday morning and his death was announced by a family member, Akinniyi Sowunmi, in a statement titled “Transition to Glory,”.
He described the deceased’s passing as a significant loss to the communication community, particularly members of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals in Nigeria (ACSPN).
The statement read in part: “This is a very sad day for us in the Communication Community in Nigeria and especially for us at the Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals in Nigeria. Our father, Pa Deacon Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON, 85, joined the saints triumphant this morning, October 8, 2026.”
The family said details of his funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
Sobowale was widely recognised for his contributions to journalism, communication scholarship and professional training in Nigeria. His career spanned journalism practice, university teaching, research and public service.
One of his notable contributions to Nigerian journalism was the introduction of opinion polling into the country's media landscape, helping to strengthen the use of research and public opinion data in news reporting.
He also played significant roles in communication education, mentoring generations of journalists and academics who went on to contribute to Nigeria's media and communication industry.
Beyond academia and journalism, Sobowale served in public office, including as a commissioner for education in Lagos State during the administration of former Governor Bola Tinubu.
In recognition of his contributions to the country, he received the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
