The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission, Saturday, confirmed the results of the 2024 Local Government Elections held on October 19, 2024, declaring the All Progressives Congress partial winners of the polls.
This is despite late arrival of materials reported in many local governments in the State.
A report from Tudun Wada in Kaduna South reported that skeletal election started around 3.30pm.
It was the same report in Badiko, Magajin Gari, and Unguwar Sarki where it was observed that materials were yet to be distributed as at 12pm.
Declaring the results, the Chairman of the Commission, Hajiya Hajara Mohammed stated that the elections saw eight political parties participating, with the All Progressives Congress winning 23 chairmanship positions and 255 councillorship positions.
“We commend the people of Kaduna State, especially the voters who came out in their numbers to exercise their democratic franchise,” said the Commission’s Chairman, Hajiya Mohammed.
“By the power vested in the Commission, I hereby wish to confirm the results earlier collected and returned by the returning officers. I am confirming these results as follows:
“APC won the 23 local government chairmanship positions and the 255 ward councillorship positions across the state,” the chairman declared.
She added that the ruling All Progressives Congress won in Birnin-Gwari, Chikun, Igabi, Ikara, Jaba, Jema’a, Kachia, Kaduna North, and Kaduna South.
Other local governments won by the APC, according to the Chairman, are Kagarko, Kajuru, Kaura, Kauru, Kubau, Kudan, Lere, Makarfi, Sabon Gari, Sanga, Soba, Zango-Kataf, and Zaria.
The breakdown of the councillorship positions, according to her, shows that the ruling party cleared the 255 councillorship positions as declared by electoral officials (returning officers).
These include: “Birnin Gwari 11 wards, Chikun 12 wards, Giwa 11 wards, Igabi 12 wards, Ikara 10 wards, Jaba 10 wards, Jema’a 12 wards, Kachia 12 wards, Kaduna North 12 wards, Kaduna South 13 wards, Kagarko 10 wards, Kajuru 10 wards, Kaura 10 wards, Kauru 11 wards.”
Others, she said, are: “Kubau 11 wards, Kudan 10 wards, Lere 11 wards, Makarfi 10 wards, Sabon Gari 11 wards, Sanga 11 wards, Soba 11 wards, Zango-Kataf 11 wards, Zaria 13 wards.”
Continuing, the Chairman emphasised, “The peaceful and orderly conduct of the election is a credit to the voters and the people of Kaduna State.”
“It shows that democracy is alive. We will continue to build on the successes recorded towards democratic consolidation.
“I commend our Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, Directors of the Commission, Electoral Officers, their assistants, and other staff of the Commission who have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this exercise. We commend their professionalism and unwavering commitment to the success of the elections.”
“Eight political parties fielded candidates in the election: ADC, AAC, APGA, LP, NNPP, PDP, PRP, YPP. The Electoral Officers and the Returning Officers have filed their reports.
“At the end of the exercise, 23 chairmanship positions and 255 councillorship positions were won.
“The 23 local government returning officers and 255 ward returning officers have declared results in their respective constituencies and submitted their reports by law, along with the presiding officers.”
Meanwhile, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has kicked against the election saying the exercise was not held in the state.
Speaking on the election in Kaduna, the PDP spokesperson, Maria Dogo, said there was no election in the State.
She said, “Election materials were taken to local government offices without contacting party agents and there were no result sheets among the materials.
“This is unacceptable and we want to tell the general public that local government election was not held in Kaduna.”
