President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded the Regisrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, describing him as respected for remitting over N50b to the covers of the federal government within a year.
According to the President, this is contrary to the practice in JAMB where not up to $1m was remitted before Oloyede's appointment.
Represented by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Tinubu disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking during a public engagement organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The dialogue on “Youth, Religion, and the Fight against Corruption” was held at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, where the Fraud Risk Assessment Project for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies was also launched by the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
While speaking on the issue of corruption in the public sector, the Vice President noted that JAMB had never made up to $1m for the Federal Government before Oloyede assumed office.
Tinubu said said, “One person I always respect is Prof Ishaq Oloyede. Over the years, JAMB never made upto $1m for the Federal Government.
“However, when Prof Oloyede assumed office, JAMB made over ₦50bn for the Federal Government in one year.”
Tinubu deplored the mislabelling and blanket stereotyping of Nigeria as a country with the highest prevalence of cybercrime and other forms of corrupt practices among its population.
This, according to him, undermines majority of the citizens maintaining the principles of integrity and diligence.
"It is regretable that over the years, the entire Nigerian populace had been linked with internet crimes without statistical proof, a development that is out of tune with the way of life of the typical Nigerian citizen.
"On the contrary, Nigerians are meticulous, authentic citizens who have been making significant contributions to innumerable fields of endeavours around the world."
He lauded efforts by the EFCC to tackle corruption through the Inter-Faith and Fraud Risk Assessment Projects, as the initiative recognizes the potential of religion as a tool for ethical reformation and underscores the importance of engaging diverse faith communities in our fight against corruption.
Other dignitaries present at the dialogue were the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi; a former Minister of Power, Babatunde Fashola; the Ọọni of Ifẹ, Ọba Enitan Ogunwusi; the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar; the President, Christian Association of Nigeria; the Chairperson, Nigeria Committee of Vice Chancellors, Professor Lilian Salami; and the JAMB Registrar.
Oloyede was appointed the registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB by former president, Muhammadu Buhari in 2016.
