Impeached speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has made a dramatic return to the assembly complex after his security aides were restored earlier on Thursday.
In a short video seen by HorizonTimes, Obasa's vehicle was led to the complex by a team of fully armed security men and made way to the Speaker’s Office around 12 noon on Thursday.
Some members of the Assembly were seen sitting under a shed with one of the them saying 'actor, actor, actor.'
Speaking after his arrival, Obasa was quoted to have said, "I've resumed and I remained the Speaker of the Assembly."
The development followed the withdrawal of the security aides attached to the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
The Chief Press Secretary to Meranda, Segun Ajiboye, confirmed the latest in a short message on Thursday, accusing Obasa and his team of allegedly breaking into the office.
“We’re at the assembly now,” a source in the Obasa camp also said.
Obasa was impeached as speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, but his security details were restored just as those of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.
Meranda was Obasa’s deputy before the impeachment but was unanimously elected to replace Obasa, making her the first female to occupy the position in the history of the state.
Though she’s yet to officially resign as the Speaker of the House, her fate was reportedly sealed over the weekend by key All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders who intervened in the crisis rocking the House of Assembly.
Former National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande; former Governor of Osun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba; former Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Muiz Banire; members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC); and some of the lawmakers had met over the weekend to find a resolution to the crisis.
It was at the meeting that the fate of Meranda was sealed as she was reportedly asked to vacate her seat.
“In truth, what they said was that Obasa’s removal was illegal and the lawmakers were directed at the meeting to go and return him,” sources familiar with the matter had said.
It was not clear yet when the House would reconvene to effect the expected changes.
It was learnt that at the end of the meetings both Obasa and Meranda, might be stepping aside for another lawmaker to lead the house.
A member of the Governors Advisor Council, Chief Muraina Taiwo, noted that one of the seven lawmakers from Lagos West was being considered by the party leaders as the new Speaker.
Meranda had adjourned plenary indefinitely two weeks ago when there was commotion in the assembly as a result of invasion by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Obasa was accused by over 90 per cent of the lawmakers of poor leadership style, perpetual lateness to legislative sections and plenary, high-handedness and disregard for colleague lawmakers and the executive, especially the governor, abuse of office and privileges, intimidation and oppression of members, misappropriation, among others
