Just In: Hunger protests begin in Abuja, Lagos, Abeokuta streets deserted

The much anticipated hunger protest has started in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, with the protesters converging at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

A court order had restricted the protest to the facility and it is not yet clear whether the protesters are ready to comply with the order.

Protesters, according to reports, started gathering as early as 6 am singing solidarity songs amidst heavily armed security operatives.

Activists and groups had declared the protest which is proposed to last for 10 days, in response to the economic hardship.

In Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, the protest has started, but on a paceful note in the Ikeja, the capital city of Lagos.

The protesters have gathered at Ikeja under bridge under heavy security, while heavy security deployment was seen parading tyhe streets in Lekki with abour 50 security vehciles.

Port Harcourt, protesters have begun to assemble in front of the popular Pleasure Park in Rivers State for the hunger protest, which begins today.

The protesters are seen waving the Nigerian flag and holding banners they brought along with them.

In Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, almost all major streets and roads were deserted as at the time of filling this report.

The Moshood Abiola Stadium in Kuto area of the city where the protest was confined to is also empty.

From Ita-Osi, Brewery, Panseke, Iyana Mortuary, Kuto, Oke-Mosan, etc, the roads remain deserted by the road users except for few vehicles seen on the road.

All banks, eatried and fuel statiosn were also under lock and keys.
