Few hours after Justice Hamza Muazu of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Maitama, Abuja, ordered the prosecution or release of the suspended Governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, the Department of State Services, DSS, has complied with the order.

Dr Peter Afunanya, the Public Relations Officer of the Service, who confirmed the development in a statement posted on its twitter handle, @OfficialDSSNG, said it was in compliance with the court order.

Justice Muazu has, Thursday morning, ordered the DSS to either release the detained former Apex Bank boss with immediate effect of charge him to court within seven days.

“Sequel to an Abuja High Court Order of today, 13th July, 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele has been charged to Court in compliance with the Order,” the DSS said.

It will be recalled that the Service had, in 2022, applied for a Court Order to detain Emefiele in respect of a criminal investigation, the embattled Emefiele obtained a restraining order from an FCT High Court.

He was however arrested in June, 2023, on the ‘strength of suspected fresh criminal infractions/information, one of which forms the basis for his current prosecution.’

“The Service assures the public of professionalism, justice and fairness in handling this matter and indeed the discharge of its duties within the confines of the law.”
