Portuguese professional football manager, José Mourinho’s contract with AS Roma has been terminated.

This was according to a statement on the football club’s website on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Mourinho and his staff will leave the club with immediate effect.

The statement reads, “AS Roma can confirm that José Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect.

“We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

“We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”

Mourinho was unveiled as the Giallorossi’s 60th coach in May 2021.

He led the team to win the Conference League in Tirana on May 25th, 2022, and to the Europa League final in Budapest last season.

The statement added that further updates on the new first team coaching staff will follow imminently.

The Portuguese was adored by fans after leading the club to a first European trophy - but this season's results and performances were disappointing.

Jose Mourinho was booed before kick-off at San Siro on Sunday night - which was utterly unsurprising.

Roma's latest defeat to Milan followed a frustrating Coppa Italia exit at the hands of arch-rivals Lazio, and was their seventh loss from 20 Serie A games so far this season - which saw them drop to ninth in the table.

The Giallorossi still have an outside chance of finishing in the Champions League spots, with only five points separating them and fourth-placed Fiorentina, but Mourinho won't be taking them any further, having paid the ultimate price for the team's dismal recent performances.

One frustrated fan wrote online, "Mourinho has ruined us even more than Monchi" - which was one hell of an accusation, given the disastrous nature of the Spaniard's tenure as sporting director.

But the online attacks were indicative of a significant shift in mood and, ultimately, signalled the end of Mourinho's Roma reign.

Indeed, it was obvious very early on during the 2023-24 campaign that all was not right at Roma, particularly behind the scenes.

According to Fabrizio Romano, former Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi is the frontrunner to replace Jose Mourinho in the Stadio Olimpico hotseat.

After two-and-a-half years in the Italian capital, Mourinho will now begin the hunt for his next job, with the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss reportedly attracting interest from a number of clubs in Saudi Arabia.
