Arsenal produced a shock 1-0 victory over Barcelona to win the women’s Champions League on Saturday in Lisbon, with Stina Blackstenius’ goal earning the Gunners their second European crown against the odds.
The Swedish striker’s drilled effort in the 74th minute allowed Renee Slegers’ team to dethrone a feted Barcelona side who have won the trophy three times in the past four seasons.
Barcelona, which has won the title three times (2021, 2023, 2024), remains third in the all-time winner’s list behind Lyon (8) and Eintracht Frankfurt (4).
Arsenal, meanwhile, is the only English club to have won the coveted prize. With two titles, it is joint-fourth in the all-time winners list with VfL Wolfsburg, Umea and Turbine Potsdam.
Defending champions Barcelona had dominated the game both in possession and shots on goal.
Arsenal had nearly taken the lead in the 21st minute of the game, when Barcelona’s Irene Paredes turned Frida Maanum's cross into her net. But the midfielder had gone slightly too early, and VAR ruled for offside.
The score remained 0-0 until the masterclass by Mead and Blackstenius in the second half, which secured their team's win over Barcelona and stunned their opponent's fans into silence.
Arsenal boss Renee Slegers, who can now call herself a European winner in her very first season with the north London club, said prior to the game that her team, who many considered the underdogs, wanted "to show bravery".
