The Abuja Electricity Distribution PLC has threatened to disconnect the electricity supply to the presidential villa, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC; the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS over a total of N47.1b debt.
Others to be disconnected include Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN; Ministries of Finance, Information, Budget, Works and Housing, Barracks, Nigeria Police Force; State liason offices in the Federal Capital Territory, amongst 48 agencies and MDAs.
The disconnection notice which was issued on Monday gave the affected MDAs, agencies, etc. 10 days ultimatum to comply and defray their debts or risk blackout from February 28, 2024.
The notice said the ultimatum became necessary following unpaid bills for services rendered to the affected places through the provision of electricity supply.
According to it, previous attempts to make them honour their obligations have not achieved the desired results.
“The Abuja Electricity Distribution PLC is constrained to do this publication with the details of Government, Ministries, Departments and Agencies with long outstanding unpaid bills for services rendered to them through the provision of electricity supply in that our previous attempts to make them honour their obligations have not achieved the desired results,” the notice read.
“The relevant MDAs are hereby given notice that the AEDC shall after the expiration of 10 days from the date of this publication, that is, after Wednesday, 28th February, 2024, embark on the disconnection of our services to them until they discharge their obligations to us by paying their debts.”
According to the notice signed by the management, Barracks and Military Formations under the office of the Chief of Defence Staff with 184 accounts is the biggest debtor with N12b debt.
Other are; FCT Ministry with 423 accounts owing N7.6b; Ministry of Finance with 237 accounts owing N5.4b; Niger State Government, Abuja liason office with 536 accounts, owing N3.5b; and Ministry of State for Petroleum with 10 accounts owing N2.1b.
Others are, the CBN Governor with 42 accounts owing N1.6b; Nigeria Police Force with 1, 286 accounts owing N1.4b; presidential villa with 6 accounts owing N923.9m; the EFCC with 6 accounts owing 291.3m; the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, with 20 accounts owing N75m; the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC with two accounts owing N60.6m; and National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, with 12 accounts, owing N56.4m.
Lagos State Governor, Abuja liason office with one account was also captured to be owing N1.6m; while the chief Justice office owes N5m; Ogun State Governor, Abuja liaison office owes N1.5m; amongst others.
