The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ondo State has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a gender-inclusive electoral process, pledging to ensure that Nigeria's elections remain equitable and accessible to all eligible citizens regardless of gender.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, gave the assurance during a sensitisation forum for women lawyers organised by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Ondo State Chapter, at the Aare Afe Babalola House, NBA Akure Bar Centre, Oke-Eda, Akure.

Represented by the Head of Department, Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Inclusivity, Mr. Olayinka Ogunseye, the REC said the Commission's commitment was anchored on the INEC Gender Policy, which is designed to eliminate discrimination, encourage equal participation and strengthen the representation of women at all stages of the electoral process.

Agboke noted that the successful implementation of the policy, particularly as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 General Election, would require the collective support of political parties, government institutions, civil society organisations and development partners.

He stressed that such collaboration would be vital in delivering elections that are inclusive, peaceful and credible.

The REC also reiterated INEC's resolve to sustain voter education and public engagement programmes aimed at increasing citizens' awareness, participation and confidence in the electoral process.

In her welcome address, the Chairperson of FIDA Ondo State, Mrs. Bolanle Olafunmiloye, FCIS, reaffirmed the association's commitment to advancing the rights of women, children and other vulnerable groups through legal advocacy, public education and strategic partnerships.

She explained that the sensitisation programme formed part of FIDA's preparations for the 2027 General Election and was designed to deepen members' understanding of INEC's gender-inclusive policies while encouraging greater participation of women in Nigeria's democratic process.
