Five dead, three injured in Abeokuta-Sagumu lone accident

Five people were confirmed dead while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries, Saturday, in an accident along the Abeokuta-Sagumu expressway.

The accident which involved a Howo Sino Truck with registration number, T-14214LA and a Mazda car, marked, KRD 975 HJ occurred lose to Day Waterman School inbound Abeokuta in Kobape area of the expressway.

The spokespersons of the Ogun sector command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Florence Okpe and the Ogun state Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the accident to our correspondent in Abeokuta.

Okpe attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed and dangerous driving on the part of the truck driver.

According to her, the truck driver made a dangerous turning without observing the road and the Mazda driver who was on high speed ran into the truck.

The TRACE spokesman disclosed that, the injured victims were taken to State Hospital, Ijaiye for medical attention while the corpse deposited at the morgue of the hospital.

Akinbiyi said, "According to eyewitness account, the driver of the Howo truck caused the crash, drove dangerously and recklessly, by not being considerate and apply caution to throughout traffic coming from Abeokuta, while turning to the outbound lane from the inbound lane.

"Out of the eight passengers in the commercial Mazda vehicle, five lost their lives, including a medical doctor, while three female adults were injured.

"Unfortunately, the driver of the Howo truck who caused the crash ran away.

"However, the accidents vehicles have been deposited at the Obafemi Owode Divisional Police Station."

But in her separate report, the FRSC Spokesperson said the victims were taken to the Federal Medical Center, FMC, Abeokuta, while the corpses were also deposited at the same hospital.

She wrote, “The injured victims were taken to FMC Abeokuta for medical attention and the corpses were also deposited at the same hospital.

“The suspected causes of the crash were excessive speed and dangerous driving on the part of the truck driver who made a dangerous turning without observing the road and the Mazda driver who was on high speed ran into the truck.”

According to her, the Sector Commander, FRSC Ogun, reiterated on speed violation among motorists and that one need to be cautious about safety.

He was also quoted to have commiserated with the family of the crash victims and advised to contact FRSC Ogun for more information about the crash.
