Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing insecurity, alleged injustice and other issues affecting the wellbeing of their constituents.

The lawmakers, including an ally of former Governor Abdul’aziz, said they could no longer remain in a party which they alleged had failed to provide adequate security for citizens amid worsening insecurity across the state.

Those who resigned are Aliyu Ango Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South; Ibrahim Tukur Bakura, representing Bakura; Faruk Musa Dosara, representing Maradun I; Bashir Abubakar Masama, representing Bukkuyum North; Muktaru Nasiru Kaura, representing Kaura North; Nasiru Abdullahi, representing Maru North; Bashar Bello, representing Bungudu West; and Bashar Aliyu, representing Gummi I.

Announcing their decision, the lawmakers accused Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration of failing to give adequate attention to insecurity affecting rural communities.

Kagara said their decision followed what he described as the failure of the APC to properly address insecurity and honour earlier agreements.

“What we are challenging Governor Lawal’s administration about is even worse now compared to previous times, so we have seen no reason to continue remaining in the APC.

“Our constituents in rural areas who voted us into power to address their security concerns were not being given any attention,” he said.

Kagara also alleged that the lawmakers had gone 32 months without receiving salaries, allowances and other entitlements as elected members of the state assembly.

The lawmakers’ resignation comes amid continuing internal disagreements and political realignments within the Zamfara APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. They did not disclose their next political destination.

However, the APC state publicity secretary, Ibrahim Danmadamin Birnin Magaji, said the party had not officially received the lawmakers’ resignation letters.

“We are still waiting for their correspondence from their respective political wards after reaching their local government executives, which would later be forwarded to us,” he said.

He added that the party had only seen the resignation letters on social media and would state its position after receiving them officially.

A party official, who spoke anonymously, said he did not blame the lawmakers for leaving, alleging that the governor had failed to reconcile with them despite efforts to resolve their differences.

The governor has not responded to the allegations. Daily Trust, however, reported that the lawmakers had previously been suspended from the APC over allegations that they attempted to impeach the Speaker of the House about a year ago.
