There was a mild drama, Friday, at America Junction, Kugba, Abeokuta, Ogun State, when some officials of Ogun State Government, removed a transformer donated to the community which had been in darkness for more than two years.
The transformer was donated to the community by Micky Kazzim, a House of Representatives candidate under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM in Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, about two weeks ago.
Barely two weeks after the former lawmaker donated the transformer, another one with the name of the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, inscribed on it, was brought to the same spot while the initial one was moved away from the spot.
It was revealed that the people of the community have been in darkness for a very long time, and all efforts to get the government donate a transformer to them proved abortive.
A member of the community who identified himself as Kazeem Ogundare revealed that letters had been written to the government on a faulty transformer in the community but with no response.
He further explained that Micky, a former member of the House of Representatives, was contacted during a radio programme where he featured, and that the former lawmaker promised to provide the community with a transformer.
Within two days, Ogundate said, the former lawmaker presented a 500KVA transformer to the community.
He added that everybody within the community was astonished when on Friday, officials of the government came with a new transformer and removed the one donated by Micky.
Another community member who identified herself as Kusimo Kudirat explained that the government had to remove the transformer from the roadside and relocated to a remote area.
She revealed that despite protest by some members of the community to leave Micky’s transformer at the junction, the government officials insisted that the new one has to be by the roadside.
“We requested a transformer from Hon Micky Kazzim and he promised us. Two weeks ago, the transformer was handed over to the community, but on Friday, I was called from Kugba that some people loyal to Dapo (Governor Dapo Abiodun) came there and said the transformer has to be shifted from the open place.
“They said they were bringing government transformer and that the one donated by Micky Kazzim has to be removed from the roadside and relocated to another place. Some members of the community disagreed that the new one should be moved to the remote part of the community since they were planning to energise it.
“Those who came insisted and before I got there, they had moved the initial one from the roadside and relocated to another place.”
The Chairman of the Isoka II Community Development Association, CDA, Kamorudeen Kadejo who had earlier received Micky’s transformer on behalf of the community, said there was nothing they could do when the government officials came.
He however said that the transformer brought by the government was late having written a letter to it over two months ago. He added that the intrigues were an attempt to outsmart one another because of the electioneering period.
“The government had promised to give us transformer but the transformer was late, we wrote a letter since two to three months ago. But I was called one day that Micky Kazzim gave us a transformer, we collected it with joy.
“But you know it is time of politics and people in power can do anything. When Micky Kazzim brought his own, we removed the faulty transformer and replaced it with the new one.
“Suddenly, the people in power brought their own and insisted that they are not against us collecting transformer from anyone, but that their own must be in Kugba junction. That’s all I know. It is time of politics and everyone is trying to outsmart one another.”
