Prof Tajudeen A. Badmus, a Consultant Urologist and Kidney Transplant Surgeon of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State has identified high consumption of animal proteins especially in bush meat, goat meats, etc as one of the risk factors for prostate cancer.
He also identified tablets used in enhancing erection as one of the high-risk factors of prostate cancer.
Professor Badmus said this, to the amasement of many participants, while delivering a lecture on ‘Prostate Cancer: The Horror of Aging’ during the commemoration of 30th anniversary of the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta, Thursday.
The expert who identified diet as one of the causative factors that can be controlled by individuals, said plant protein is protective of prostate cancer, unlike the animal protein.
Professor Badmus who identified ageing as the main cause of the prostate cancer said there is a direct proportion of the cancer with the process of ageing.
According to him, the risk of cancer increases as the age progresses saying while 50% of people with age 50 develops prostate cancer, about 90% of people aged 100 come down with the prostate problem.
While advocating for consistent screening of persons above 50 years, Prof Badmus said an ageing individual has not come down with prostrate only because it has not been detected.
