The Super Falcons of Nigeria have moved top of Group B in the ongoing FIFA Women World Cup after defeating the tournament’s co-host, Australia.
The Nigeria Female football team defeated Australia 3 goals to 2, to move top of the group on the same points with Canada Women.
Australia which came into the match with three points following a victory over Republic of Ireland in their first game, struck first in the 45th minute of the game when Emily van Egmond converted a cross by a team mate, Cortnee Vine, with her right foot.
Nigeria’s Uchenna Kanu responded, few minutes into the extra time, when she latched on to a loose ball and puts it into the net with her left.
Two quick substitutions from Nigeria Coach, Randy Waldrum at the 64th minute, paid off when Osinachi Ohale heads the ball into the opposition net from close range, a minute later, from Rasheedat Ajibade’s cross.
Falcons talisman, Assisat Oshoala put the game beyond the reach of the co-host of the tournament at the Brisbane Stadium, after finding the net at the 72nd minute with her right foot.
Australia’s second goal at the extra minutes of the final half by Alanna Kenndy, when she headed home a cross from Kyra Cooney, was not enough to deny the Nigeria team the three points needed in its hope of qualify for the knock out stage of the tournament.
With the goal, Oshoala becomes the first African player to score at three Women's world Cup.
