Flying Eagles of Nigeria have surrendered the top slot in Group D at the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina to the Junior Samba Boys of Brazil after a 2-0 defeat in the final last group match.
After a brilliant outing against Italy, Nigeria was no match for the Brazilian team in the final group match at the FIFA U20WC, suffering their first defeat in the tournament.
The five-time winners scored the two goals against the Flying Eagles in the first half, thanks to Jean Pedroso who broke the deadlock at the 43rd minutes before the lead was extended few minutes after, by Marquinhos at the extra minutes of the first half.
Three quick substitutions of Lawal Salim by Rilwanu Sarki; Daniel Daga by Tochukwu Nadi and Victor Ehuwa Eletu by Joshua John, by Coach Ladan Bosso at the 57th minutes could not prove any difference.
Nigeria started well and on the front foot with Jude Sunday rattling the Brazilian post early on, but the Samba Boys took control of proceedings at La Plata and never looked back thereafter.
The South American dominated the encounter after surviving that early attack from Nigeria and deservedly went into the break with a two-goal lead.
In the second half, it was more of the same as Brazil came close to adding to the scoreline on several occasions while Nigeria once again hit the post in search of a goal.
In the end, Brazil held on to the win that sees them top Group D with six points, the same as Nigeria who dropped to third in the group after Italy smashed Dominican Republic 3-0 in the other group game on the night.
Bosso said his boys had already booked a spot in the knockout stage heading into the game against Brazil.
In their inaugural match, the Flying Eagles soared to a 2-1 triumph over the Dominican Republic.
They continued their dominance in their subsequent outing, securing a resolute 2-0 win against Italy, courtesy of goals masterfully crafted by Salem Fago and Jude, Sunday.
