Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of launching a personal vendetta after he publicly referenced Chapter 9 of the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry Report.

Malami’s office alleged that unannounced EFCC raids on his Abuja and Kebbi offices and residences were retaliation for his call for EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyede to step aside over alleged bias.

The raids reportedly targeted documents linked to Chapter 9, raising concerns about intimidation, retaliation, and staff safety.

According to Malami’s aide, Mohammed Bello Doka, Chapter 9 contains damaging allegations against Olukoyede, including financial impropriety, abuse of office, obstruction of justice and award of contracts to associates and family members.

He said the EFCC’s actions were a desperate attempt to suppress the report and silence Malami.

The EFCC denied wrongdoing, insisting the searches were part of an ongoing investigation into Malami, but Malami’s camp questioned the timing immediately after its public statement on Chapter 9.

Doka demanded transparency and accountability, insisting they would not be intimidated.

Civil society groups, including HURIWA, called the raids an abuse of power and demanded an independent investigation and Olukoyede’s resignation.

The Nigerian Bar Association also condemned the EFCC for alleged misuse of authority.

Malami’s office repeatedly raised fears for the safety of staff and held the EFCC responsible for any harm.

Activists insisted Nigerians must know what Chapter 9 contains.

Critics warned the incident threatens due process, undermines EFCC independence, and erodes public trust in anti-corruption institutions.

Senior government officials urged federal intervention to ensure the EFCC is not used for political persecution and operates within the law.

Malami’s office pledged to continue the push for the report’s full release and accountability, vowing not to back down despite alleged intimidation.
