Following the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari over thr recently cult killings in Ogun State which has claimed no fewer than 16 lives, Ogun State Police Command said it has arrested 22 suspected cultist within 48 hours.
The suspected cultists were arrested by a special squad led by the Assistance Commissioner of Police in the department of operations.
According to a release by the Police Public Relations Officer, Oyeyemi, the suspects who have confessed to be of Eiye and Aiye confraternities were arrested in their hideouts in Lafenwa and Sapon areas of Abeokuta.
According to him, some were also arrested in Sagamu and were being investigated on their role in the recent killings across the State.
The statement read, "In our resolve to checkmate the disturbing activities of cultists across the State which necessitated the formation of a special squad headed by the Assistance Commissioner of Police Department of operation, the Squad has swung into action and arrested not fewer than 22 cultists in different parts of the State.
"The arrested cultists who have affirmed their membership of Aye and Eiye confraternities were apprehended when the Squad stormed their hideouts at Mayas in Lafenwa and Oju Ogabra in Sapon area of Abeokuta.
"Some of the suspects were also apprehended in Sagamu during the similar operation carried out by the squad. All the arrested suspects are currently being investigated to ascertain their roles in the cult war that engulfed the State recently which claimed the life of some cult members."
He said the State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole had commended the quick response of the squad and urged them to take the battle to the doorsteps of all known cultists in the State.
The CP, According to the statement, also appealed to members of the public to always cooperate with the team by giving them necessary information that will enhance their operation, as security is everybody’s business.
It will be recalled that no fewer than 16 cult members were in the last two weeks killed in Abeokuta, Sagamu and Ilaro areas of Ogun State following the gruesome murder of a leader of cult group popularly called Tommy in Abeokuta.
