The abductors of 39 pupils and seven teachers kidnapped from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State are reportedly showing willingness to release their captives following a major breakthrough by security agencies, which have identified members of the gang, their associates and support networks.

Security sources disclosed that intelligence-driven operations by the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies had successfully penetrated the kidnappers' network, leading to the identification of key collaborators across different parts of the country.

According to the sources, the development has put the abductors under intense pressure, making them increasingly apprehensive and more inclined to free the victims.

"The kidnappers are becoming increasingly apprehensive. Their confidence has been shaken because they know that security agencies have identified members of their network and some of their associates.

"This has made them more willing to release the children," a security source said.

Another source revealed that joint teams of DSS operatives and military personnel were closing in on the kidnappers' hideout after tracing their operational network and blocking possible escape routes, expressing optimism that the victims would be rescued safely.

The sources added that security agencies had deliberately adopted an intelligence-led approach to avoid endangering the lives of the abducted pupils and teachers, while sustaining pressure on the criminal network.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, expressed optimism over the ongoing rescue operation, stating that troops had made "tremendous progress" towards securing the release of the victims.

The Army Chief also reassured residents that the South-West remains one of the country's most peaceful regions despite the incident.

He noted that security forces were committed to ensuring the safe return of the abductees.

The 46 victims, 39 pupils and seven teachers, were abducted when gunmen attacked three schools in Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota and Alawusa communities in Oriire Local Government Area, triggering nationwide concern and renewed calls for stronger security around educational institutions.

Security agencies have yet to announce any arrests in connection with the abduction, but officials insist ongoing intelligence operations have significantly weakened the kidnappers' network and increased the prospects of the victims' safe release.
