65, 699 Permanent Voters Cards, 904 ballot boxes and 59 election bags were amongst the items destroyed when hoodlums invaded the Abeokuta South office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Thursday.

The Commission, in a statement by the National Commissioner and the Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, further revealed that 26 voting cubicles, 30 megaphones and 8 power generators were also destroyed in the process.

Arsonists, about 1am on Thursday invaded the facility with loaves of bread soaked with petrol to ignite fire with which they burnt down the facility.

The arsonists also invaded an Ede South office of the Commission in Osun State, few hours after the attack on the Abeokuta facility, using the same loaves of bread soaked with petrol.

“The incident occurred around 1.15am when some unidentified persons overpowered the security personnel on duty and set the entire building ablaze.

“The main building and all the Commission’s movable assets in the office were destroyed. They include 904 ballot boxes, 29 voting cubicles, 30 megaphones, 57 election bags, 8 electric power generators and 65, 699 uncollected Permanent Voters Cards.”

The INEC National Commissioner revealed that the impact on the Osun office was limited to a section of the building ‘and only some furniture items were destroyed.’

“The incident occurred in the early hours of this morning when some unidentified persons attacked the building and set a portion of it ablaze.

“Fortunately, the damage to our Ede South Local Government was limited to a section of the building and only some furniture items were destroyed.”

With about 100 days to the election and movement of materials to the offices nationwide, INEC described the simultaneous attack as worrisome.

He further revealed that the Commission has conveyed ‘and emergency meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) tomorrow Friday 11th November, 2023 to discuss the disturbing trend.’
